Participants and Data Collection

The maternity ward survey identified 178 Aboriginal infants. A total of 149 mothers (aged from 15 to 45 years) and their infants agreed to participate in the Study.

Two-thirds of these mothers were Aboriginal and one-third of the children had an Aboriginal father and a non-Aboriginal mother.

Data collection

Participating mothers are visited in their homes every six months by our Project Officer, Jane Anderson.

During this visit she:

  • discusses how things are going;
  • completes a structuredquestionnaire about the child’s health, development, nutrition, history of ill health and injury, and use of health and children’s services; and
  • weighs and measures the child.

At each visit a photo of the child is taken. Copies of the photos are given to the mothers at the next visit.

Children are given a comprehensive health check and development assessment when they are 1, 3 and 4.5 years old. If any problems are identified at this time, a referral to services is organised and transport provided if necessary.
